About Good Shepherd

History

In 1906 we began as a mission church worshipping in a Firemen's Hall. Gradually, we purchased property, acquired and moved the vacated, 156 year old, wooden edifice of an Episcopalian church and refurbished it. The church was consecrated in 1910 and still serves us well. In 1920 a Parish House was built and now houses a chapel, the sacristy and a “child's place”. A three-story brick Education Building was dedicated in 1937 and continues to accommodate many church and community activities.

The fruitful years of this growing congregation, church school and choir continue. There has been joy over the years and sadness too when we lost young men in wars and good and faithful members to the years.

We are thankful for our pastors who have faithfully preached the Gospel and offered the Sacraments to all who believe. We are proud of our many young men and women who have entered the ministry. Our Sunday Church School has been blessed with excellent teachers - our choirs with talented directors. Councils, committees and organizations have been enthusiastic and effective in their leadership.

There are many stories to be told - of a missionary to India, war bond drives, help to the Red Cross, dedication to the study of the Bible, assisting a young seminarian in Bali, stocking food pantries…our choirs singing at Radio City and performing Gilbert & Sullivan operettas in our Great Hall…the ballet performances, Wild West and Gay Nineties shows. We can't forget the flea markets, boutiques, strawberry festivals, cake sales, Anniversary Day Parades. And, so much more.

As we prepare for our 100th Anniversary, we look back with gratitude for the strength, conviction and dedication of our forefathers to the ministry of Good Shepherd and the community.

Continuing in their footsteps, we are a family and we worship together, work together, laugh together, cry together and reach out to all who would join us.

Mission & Values

The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd celebrates and responds to the ministry of Jesus shared in sacred scripture as the crucified and risen Lord. Our vision binds us together as ministers, unifies our faith, and sets us into the community to build a hospitable and just community of faith. Our values are found in the testimony of scripture, the Lutheran confessions, and the social context of our own calling as Christians.

The context of our ministry provides the foundation for our vocation as individual Christians and as a congregation. Through participation in public worship, Biblical study, we seek to offer worship to the entire community in ways that communicate the love of God through the Word and Sacraments.
