A Whirlwind, A Storm - Remembering Job 38

by Rev. David H. Rommereim

As Sandy

Spun through town,

Damaging, threatening millions

With chaotic inconvenience,

The havoc landed

On one

Take home,

Sound.

I would love to be

The poet

Of that deep

Iridescent yowl,

When the long evening

Held all life

In the hyphen

Between ruin and awe.

The enduring, crushing throttle

Came from a bowel

The caterwaul

Could not muffle.

Its throat buzzed

Through trees,

And all available surface

Became a whirligig.

Whirling, wisp of wind

Barked off matter

Discovering a cacophonic melody

To schlep each note to the periphery.

The womb of the storm lingered

As if playing a tune,

Beating a rhythm,

Reminding earthlings

That our power

Has a nomenclature

Of beleaguered

Assumptions.

All that is

Becomes quiescent,

And a bi-line

Of observation and fanfare,

Recollecting that we

Consume,

And, undaunted,

Disassemble dreams.

If we were,

As it is,

We would

Touch the fingerprint

On the pulses' Hmmmmm,

Spit in the ear,

Let Sound off,

And stand near awe.
